Blue Cordial pens my journey through the CSU subject: INF206 Social Media for Information Professionals. This subject explores communication, networking, collaboration and Social Media technology tools offered via Web 2.0. Social Networking affords engagement with these tools facilitating participation by contribution, collaboration, conversation, content-creation, connectivity, discovery, aggregation and/or software development. Social Networking enhances online communication between two or more individuals, business and consumers (B2C), business and business (B2B) and peer-to-peer (P2P) relationships for information sharing, connectivity, discovery or real-time communication.
I currently utilise Web 2.0 technologies which include the CSU online learning and libraries environment,Facebook, Twitter, TweetDeck, Skype, WordPress, YouTube and Envolve – a service software chat facility for one-on-one or multiple guests, embedded in my business website. Whilst I have utilised many others over time, and hold current accounts with LinkedIn, GoogleDocs and other industry-specific networking sites such as Coroflot, the former, to date, suffice for my business and personal needs. I am yet to explore the benefits of Delicious and Flickr. I briefly explored Second Life in 2005, appreciating its marketing potential. As I increasingly witness the merging of our virtual and physical lives, as posed by Web 3.0 definitions (Wikipedia.org), I look forward to re-engaging with Second Life, exploring the marketing and brand avenues companies and institutions embrace and re-considering its Social Networking value.
I expect to aggregate the differing technologies coherently in my noosphere (mind) for the benefit of my online and offline communities and discern more knowledgeably between fad and valuable Web 2.0 technologies, as appropriate in any specific context. Discovering new friends, ways of knowing, interests, entertainment, laughter and interaction, if I am blessed to live another few decades, I seek to learn more about the cross-cultural world in which I live and our new ways of communicating. If sought, I will share my learning with family, friends and colleagues for their individual, business or collective advantage. Relevant to my passion for, and continuing studies in, Ecological Agriculture, I hope to help spread the value of the Ecological message via Social Media, increasing audience reach by meeting people where people meet.
