In today’s crazy social media world one way to define and organise the number of posts out there is to use hashtags. Hashtags have a simple purpose and a simple meaning. After each post, be it on Twitter, Tumblr or Instagram, users can describe the post by # followed by a single word or a string of words that can seem to be nearly a sentence. Although they are a simple concept a whole world has been created around the use of hashtags. It is now just as important to have a creative hashtag as it is have a good post.
Hashtags are most commonly used on Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr, and increasingly on Facebook. Over all these mediums hashtags are used for two main purposes. Firstly, hashtags succinctly describe people’s posts for their followers and the public. This is most important on Instagram, where hashtags give the user an opportunity to explain the photo they posted. Secondly, hashtags are a means for people to find specific posts or topics. On all types of social media there are ‘explore’ or ‘trend’ sections where people can find specific posts, posts similar to their own or the most popular posts, for example using the ‘trending’ hashtags.
There is no limit to the number of hashtags per post either, the more hashtags the more likely your post will be found by others. Another element that adds to how accessible your post or topic is, relates to the simplicity of the hashtag. Simple words are easy to find, the perfect example is the ever popular #yolo. The world of hashtags does have an element of creativity though and are limited only by the imagination of the post-er and the accepted norms of social engagement. Originality allows users to better express themselves in their post. Hashtags are very popular in Instagram due to the photographic nature of Instagram and the need to express the Instagram photograph in words. It is interesting to note that the rapid growth of Instagram compared to Twitter over the last year is increasing the normalcy of the hashtags in society.
For as long as there is a social media world there will be a hashtag world as well #thatsfinebyme #lovehashtags #bluecordialblog.
